Red Nose Day - look silly for a serious cause.
Red Nose Day has long been a cause close to my heart. This is my why-
In high school, my teacher lost his son to SIDS. I remember being told in our morning class and feeling so sad, so shocked that this could happen, and so helpless. I couldn't comprehend how we live in a world full of modern medicine, technology and understanding, and that somehow a little baby could go to sleep and never wake up.
Red Nose Day that year, my best friend and I took it upon ourselves to make sure everyone on our campus had a Red Nose. Then once they had one, we made sure they had two... three... four Red Noses. One for their nose, one as a necklace, a bracelet and a truck sized Red Nose as a hat. It felt like the one little thing we could do to help.
Since then, Red Nose Day has felt important to me. I never imagined for a moment that one day Red Nose would be so personally important.
Saying hello to Rex is the most wonderful and awe inspiring memory that I hold. Every moment that we had together is full of a lifetime of love.
Saying goodbye to Rex is the most painful memory that I hold. Every moment that we don't have together, in this realm, holds a lifetime of love and longing.
When Rex died, I felt my world (my soul, my heart, my being) shatter. It was Red Nose, my exceptional counselor and my beautiful support group that helped me hold the pieces together. For that, I am forever grateful.
The work that Red Nose does with bereaved parents, funding research, educating and campaigning for little lives is essential. It is heartbreaking that 9 little lives are lost every day to Stillbirth, SIDS, SUDI and, like Rex, for completely unexplained reasons. That number is double the road toll. Awareness, research, education, campaigning and support can help to save lives. Every dollar helps!
