I’m running my first Half Marathon (21.1km) (and going for a PB!) since becoming a mum, for Red Nose and in honour of Maeve, so that Red Nose can continue their important work supporting Australian families.
Each year in Australia, over 3,200 babies and children die suddenly and unexpectedly. Around 110,000 Australians have a miscarriage. 2,200 more endure the pain of stillbirth, 600 lose their baby in the first 28 days after birth and many more face the grief of termination for medical reasons.
This is a cause that is close to my heart, and that is why I am raising funds to help Red Nose work towards a future where no child dies suddenly or unexpectedly.
I am running in October because October marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. October is a time for Australia to break the silence and acknowledge the heartbreak happening too often right now.
In October 2023 I was lucky enough to welcome my beautiful baby girl into this world and I am so grateful she is here to watch me work towards and achieve my goal. She was born 11 days after International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day (October 15) which is the day my close friend gave birth to her beautiful sleeping daughter, Maeve.
My run on October 6 coincides with the date Maeve was diagnosed with Triploid Syndrome, at 18 weeks gestation. A rare and fatal condition which is the reason she became an angel 🪽, Maeve was growing perfectly up until she was diagnosed. The difference between Maeve and my bub was minute until 18 weeks gestation. Triploid Synrome is an incurable diagnosis which is unfortunately not usually diagnosed until 10-14 weeks gestation. More awareness is needed to make sure loving and deserving parents, like Maeve’s, are supported in the best way they can be.
